Clarksburg InvenTeam Presents the TorchCord™ to Elementary School Students

On May 21, we presented the Torch Cord™ at a local college, Montgomery College. We presented for children from the ages of 5-9, as a part of a college tour they were participating in. It was a great opportunity for us to get feedback and new ideas from the younger kids. They presented us with many more ideas that we will definitely take into account as we develop the Torch Cord™ and related inventions. It was a great experience for the team members because it gave us more practice for the presentation at MIT. We made minor changes in the presentation because of the younger audience. We used smaller words and different examples from those in our “Elevator Speech” so that the kids could understand them. It was a lot of fun and we may be presenting for them again sometime soon!

On Friday, March 20, 2009, the Clarksburg High School InvenTeam displayed its Torch Cord™ invention at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History as part of the March Madness for the Mind event, hosted by the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA). Upon arrival at the museum at 8:00 am, the team prepared its display and attented a networking session led by Wisconsin School of Business professor Joan Gillman. From 12-5:00 pm, during the public exhibition, the InvenTeam along with groups from colleges such as Dartmouth College, Johns Hopkins University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Pennsylvania State University welcomed the public and was available for inquiries. At 2:30 pm, the team presented the Torch Cord™ in the Lemelson Center's Spark!Lab, a hands-on space for young children and families to learn about the invention process. Following the public exhibition, the InvenTeam attended a formal dedication ceremony for the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation and a reception in honor of Mrs. Dorothy Lemelson, chairman of the Lemelson Foundation. Students also had an opportunity to speak with numerous representatives from various colleges about the invention. It would also like to recognize Mr. Paul A. Ormsby, Media Services Technician at Clarksburg High School, for documenting the event. March Madness for the Mind 2009 was an incredible and rewarding experience for the Clarksburg High School InvenTeam.

Informational Event a Success!

CLARKSBURG, Maryland - January 21, 2009

On Thursday, January 15, members of the Coyote Inventors Club participated in an Open House event at Clarksburg High School to provide parents of incoming freshmen with an idea of what the club does.  A small group of club members, along with the club sponsors, set up an informational display about the Inventors Club, which included both print and electronic media materials.  The club website was on display throughout the evening, and brochures were also distributed to interested parents.  In addition to the informational materials, the working prototype of the InvenTeam's TorchCordTM was on display and available for parents to test.  This event was a perfect opportunity for club members to practice their presentation skills, which will be useful during the presentation in June.

New Year News

CLARKSBURG, Maryland - January 9, 2009

Happy New Year from the Clarksburg High School InvenTeam! With 2009 underway, we're looking forward to our presentation at EurekaFest at MIT during the summer.  Now that we have returned from break, progress on the TorchCordTM has resumed.  In December, the Public Relations team began contacting various companies about donations for the project.  We are now following up with these companies.  At this point, we are experimenting with the various product samples to select the most compatible ones.  Our working prototype is being adjusted based on our findings.  We plan to continue making progress throughout the winter and spring.  We are confident that, through teamwork, we will meet our project deadlines. We are continuing to promote awareness of our organization and its goals, and hope to attract the attention of corporations and organizations within the technology and engineering fields.

We plan to publish regular press releases through the remainder of the school year.

The Materials Search Continues

CLARKSBURG, Maryland - December 12, 2008 - Public Relations team works to locate raw materials

During our meeting on Friday, December 12, all of our team members worked on the engineering aspects of the project with our Public Relations team contacting local companies with questions regarding materials and corporate donations. The fundraising effort has begun! We hope to install a technical design program on the computers in our work lab to assist with developing "blueprints" and organizing ideas for the project. We are hoping to present our project at the Smithsonian in March, so we are adjusting our schedules and dividing tasks to anticipate that goal.

Making Progress on the Torch CordTM

CLARKSBURG, Maryland - December 4, 2008 - November was a productive month for the Clarksburg High School InvenTeam.

Our team made significant progress during the month of November, both in the technical aspect of the project and in improving our media and communication systems. Our engineering team has developed a functional model of a computer wire that illuminates when touched, and plans to move forward with that model. We have purchased some of the materials necessary for building the prototype, including USB wires for testing. Both our Financial and Media teams also made progress in November; with our financial coordinators actively maintaining our purchase records and our Public Relations Representatives responding to public inquiries regarding the project.

During the month of December, we plan to further develop our illuminating wire model, and begin working with various power sources for the Torch CordTM.
